Holy, Holy, Holy!

There is something special and timeless about hymns. Some of them paint vivid pictures, and I imagine the angels surrounding the throne, worshiping God. One such hymn is Holy, Holy, Holy

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

How small and insignificant the troubles of this world seem compared to the beauty of you, God!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

The glassy sea is the calm before the storm. The saints recognize the power of the Lord and throw down their earthly crowns, expectantly awaiting the Lord’s judgement.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
perfect in power, in love and purity.

Sinful man sees his own creations as wonderful and splendid. He looks to his own abilities for his strength.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity.

God’s work speaks for itself. His power is mighty. He has shaped the very earth to His will.
